Our Story
Lexum is owned by the Canadian Legal Information Institute – CanLII, a nonprofit founded by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. We are proud to be part of the family of the 14 law societies mandated by the provinces and territories to regulate Canada’s legal profession in the public interest.
We began in the early 1990s as a research lab at the University of Montreal, driven by a shared belief that primary legal information should be freely accessible to all. In 1992, we broke new ground by launching the very first legal website to be developed in Canada to provide access to the Supreme Court of Canada decisions online at no cost. At the time there were only three other websites in the country. It was also the world’s first bilingual legal website.
In 2000, we partnered with the Federation of Law Societies of Canada (FLSC) to launch CanLII, our most widely known initiative and now the most-used legal research platform in the country.
Today, we support legal institutions around the world——helping them manage, enrich, and publish legal information at scale.

Lexum Chair
Prof. Daniel Poulin established the LexUM Chair in Legal Technologies at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal to maintain the leadership position established by the Lexum laboratory in computer science and legal information.

Lexum is one of the founding members of the Free Access to Law Movement (FALM) as well as one of the authors and promoters of the Montreal Declaration on Free Access to Law.
