Executive summary
A large number of American courts and a significant number of tribunals have set up information systems to make their decisions – both reported and unpublished, citable or not – available to serve their internal needs, the needs of the public, or both. In the first part of this paper, we examine their reasons for doing so and we summarize the main uses of these decision databases.
Then we single out the best practices based on 20 years of work in the field and we present Decisia. We conclude with the main benefits of self-publishing for both the publishing institution and society.
