Artificial intelligence is changing how legal information is searched, distributed and understood. At the same time, expectations around trust, transparency and public access continue to grow. These are the conversations that will shape the next chapter of access to legal information.
Since the first Law via the Internet (LVI) conference was held in 1997, each edition has reflected the questions facing the legal information community at that moment.
Today, a new set of questions is emerging as artificial intelligence, multilingual search and increasingly sophisticated publishing tools reshape how legal information is explored and understood.
How do we preserve trust while adopting new tools? How do we make growing collections easier to navigate? How can innovation strengthen public access to the law rather than simply making existing processes faster?
Courts, legal information institutes, researchers, publishers and technology providers often approach these challenges from different perspectives, which is precisely why international collaboration remains so valuable. Through initiatives such as the Free Access to Law Movement, ideas developed in one jurisdiction continue to inform work taking place in many others, creating a community that advances through shared experience.
Academic institutions such as the L.R. Wilson Chair also play an important role by exploring emerging questions before they become everyday practice, connecting scientific inquiry with the practical realities of publishing, managing and preserving legal information. Innovation is often strongest when it grows through an ongoing dialogue between research and practice.
LVI 2026 will bring these conversations together, offering an opportunity to explore the questions shaping the future of legal information alongside the people already working to answer them.
